    Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. At Gilman’s point (18,600 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. After spending a few moments taking in the plains of Africa and your accomplishment, we descend to Horombo Hut. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

    DAY 4 Karanga Camp- Barafu Camp

    DAY 5 BARAFU CAMP (15,331ft) -UHURU PEAK (19,341ft)- MWEKA CAMP (10,065ft).

    The Challenging Route Day 1
    From Moshi to Umbwe cave campsite. | Umbwe route Kilimanjaro climbing

    Elevation: 1200m to 1700m to 2850m.
    Distance: 10 km.
    Hiking time: 4-5 hours.
    Habitat: Montana forest.
    Umbwe route Kilimanjaro climbing Umbwe route Kilimanjaro climbing | Pick up with our vehicle from the hotel, drive to Umbwe gate. Here after completing the gate registration procedures, the trek starts through the rainforest to Umbwe cave campsite where you will find all tents already setup then stop for dinner and overnight. Today you will walk across ridges and valleys into a really thick forest.

    Day 2

    Umbwe route Kilimanjaro climbing Elevation: 2850m to 3950m
    Distance: 9 km
    Hiking time: 4-5 hours
    Habitat: Montana forest and heather
    Umbwe route Kilimanjaro climbing Umbwe route Kilimanjaro climbing | This day after breakfast you will trek through the remaining forest to the moorland and heath zone and you will be enjoying some wonderful views of Barranco valleys and ice cap on top of the mountain. Then you will arrive to barranco camp for dinner and overnight.

    Day 3
    Barranco Camp Acclimatization | Umbwe route Kilimanjaro climbing

    Umbwe route Kilimanjaro climbing| You will spend Day 3 exploring near Barranco Camp for much-needed acclimatization. Keep your camera handy to capture the scenery of the groundsel-clad campsite. Many trekkers rank this as their favorite camp on this trail, which another reason this is perfect spot for your acclimatization day. If you are highly confident in your body’s ability to acclimatize well, you can choose the 6-Day Umbwe Itinerary.

    Day 4
    Barranco campsite to Karanga campsite | Umbwe route Kilimanjaro climbing

    Elevation: 3950m to 3900m
    Distance: 6 km
    Hiking time: 4-5 hours
    Habitat: Moorland

    Today you will be having a short day walk and in the late morning you will start climbing Barranco wall and reach 4200m for acclimatization and continue crossing ridges and valleys to Karanga campsite for hot lunch. After lunch you will have a short rest and get another acclimatization of trekking up the screed slopes towards the Southern ice field then you will return to the camp for dinner and overnight.

    Day 5
    Karanga campsite to Barafu campsite

    Elevation: 3900m to 4620m
    Distance: 5 km.
    Hiking time: 3-4 hours
    Habitat: Alpine Desert

    Today trek up to the Barafu ridge campsite is tough because of altitude. The walking hours is few because is steep so it need slowly walk so to avoid fatigue as well as high altitude sickness. You will walk across alpine desert with strong cold wind blowing because there are no trees around as well as getting closer to the Kibo glaciers. You will have lunch and early dinner of around 1700hrs then rest until midnight when you commence you push for the summit.

    Day 6
    Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

    Elevation Gain: 1,295 meters
    Elevation Loss: 2,795 meters
    Walking Time: 14-16hours
    Distance: 19km
    Its summit day and you’ll be woken at 11pm for hydration, food and a quick medical check. You’re very close now; but this section of the climb is the most dangerous. You’l l be climbing a steep gradient of heavy scree in darkness through the night as the temperature drops to below freezing. But as you reach Stellar Point, something amazing begins. Imperceptibly at first, then more quickly, the sky pales to the softest blue and as you look east, the sun rises apricot, pink and gold above the cloud horizon. Tramping through iridescent ice fields burnished gold by the colours of sunrise and past impressive, impassive Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers, look west to see the giant shadow of Kilimanjaro spreading across the plains far below you. In another hour you’ll reach Uhuru Peak. You have conquered Umbwe Route. Marvel at the glorious vista with Mawenzi silhouetted against the blue skies and the dawn clouds gliding below. There’ll be time for pictures before you make your descent via breakfast at Barafu Camp. Your journey isn’t over, yet. You’ve a long descent over loose gravel through ice-capped outcrops and down to the welcoming moorland of the lower reaches. Mweka Camp nestles in lush vegetation in the mists of the upper forest and you’ll enjoy good food and good company as your body recovers from the harsh but beautiful experience of the night before

    Day 7
    Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi

    Elevation Loss: 1,600 meters
    Walking Time: 3-4hours
    Distance: 10km
    With Uhuru Peak a glorious memory far behind you, you’ll begin your hike back to civilisation on a full stomach. The slope here is gentler than the ascent at Umbwe, but it can be slippery so watch those knees! You’ll have time to take in the misty cloud forest and perhaps even spot a Colobus monkey or two. Arriving at Mweka Gate you’ll receive your summit certificates and there’s an opportunity to buy sodas and t shirts. Our Viva Africa Tours vehicle will take you back to your hotel in Moshi.
